Woman Hollering Creek free essay sample

October 8, 2010 English 102 Culture is the â€Å"System of qualities, convictions and methods of realizing that manage networks of individuals in their every day lives† (qtd. In Rothstein-Fusch and Trumball 3). Each culture is extraordinary and one of a kind in its own way of life. Culture is essentially life itself. The short story â€Å"Woman Hollering Creek† by Sandra Cisneros is an away from of these qualities by uniting life in Mexico and the United States. The peruser gets the chance to see the two sides of Cleofilas, the hero of the short story, culture as she moves to another spot with her new spouse Juan Pedro. She appreciates viewing telenovelas in light of the fact that she realizes her life will never match the lives of wonderful ladies from the telenovelas. Cleofilas starts to experience an emotional circumstance by living with a damaging spouse and being overwhelmed by men. In the Latin society a typical fantasy is the La Llorona, the sobbing lady that Cleofilas appears to experience. We will compose a custom exposition test on Lady Hollering Creek or on the other hand any comparable subject explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page Perceiving the components of Mexican culture is significant in comprehension Cisneros’s short story â€Å"Woman Hollering Creek. † The telenovelas condition Latina females in their perspectives about sentiment. The TV programs depict the adoration and life numerous young ladies envision as they grow up to be young ladies. For instance, Cleofilas needed her life to be of â€Å"passion in its most flawless crystalline essence† (Cisneros 239). Before getting hitched, Cleofilas’ life comprised of endless tasks, enduring her siblings and her father’s griping. She didn't have the existence that she looked for. At the point when she wedded Juan Pedro, she figured her life would move and resemble the ones from the telenovelas. The impact of wonderful ladies in the dramas is additionally observed when Cleofilas chooses to roll out an improvement: â€Å"Does she color her hair you think? (Cisneros 239) Cleofilas’ choice to color her hair shows that she isn't content with her looks and appearance. She has a picture that ladies from the telenovelas have brilliant lives in both love and sentiment, simply because they are excellent and color their hair like â€Å"Lucia Mende z† (239). Cleofilas’ spouse doesn’t seem to resemble the attractive men from the dramas: â€Å"His face despite everything scarred from acne†¦this man who farts and burps and wheezes as well†¦who doesn’t care at all for the telenovelas† (Cisneros 241). This shows Cleofilas needs her better half to watch the dramas and be affected by them as is she. The way that Cleofilas makes reference to he doesn't care for the dramas demonstrates the amount she wants for her significant other to be progressively similar to the men in the telenovelas. Having an alternate name would have most likely had any kind of effect in Cleofilas’ life: â€Å"Somehow she would need to change her name to Topazio, or Yesenia, Cristal, Adriana, Stefania, Andrea, or something more poetic†(Cisneros 243). Cleofilas felt that beneficial things happened to ladies who were named after gems, no good thing would happen to a young lady with a name like Cleofilas. From the earliest starting point, Cisneros uncovered the control of the dad, over to his little girl. In Mexico and the United States, the life of Cleofilas is set apart by a male-overwhelmed society: â€Å"†¦look south, and fantasy about coming back to the errands that never finished, six bum siblings and one elderly person complaining† (248). In Cleofilas’s family, their moderate perspectives about ladies imply that all the young men are outside helping their dad, and ladies are virtual detainees inside their homes, doing errands. During circumstances such as the present, ladies are not permitted to be working citizenry, simply keep an eye on their spouses. The men ask something, and the ladies submissively do it. Also, Cisneros’s own background mirror their idea: â€Å"‘Born in Chicago in 1954, Cisneros grew up with six siblings and one dad, or â€Å"seven fathers,† as she puts it’† (â€Å"Becoming a Latina Writer† 247). She additionally composed that she was the â€Å"keeper of six swans,† as she incidentally discovered her name was meant the significance: â€Å"Keeper of the Swans† (â€Å"Becoming a Latina Writer† 247). Men tend to truly mishandle the ladies, and the ladies need to take it: â€Å"But when the opportunity arrived, and he slapped once, and over and over; until the lip split and drained and plantation of blood, she didn’t retaliate, she didn’t break into tears†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Cisneros 240). In this sort of alpha-male family, the man wears the jeans, and he can pull off mishandling his better half or daughter(s). This is the barbarous destiny of Cleofilas’s future. She would need to endure it, each time that Juan Pedro become inebriated and laid a hand on Cleofilas. She is extreme, taking into account how much maltreatment she needs to take. The city was even a man’s world, where the ladies were rarely outside, just remained at home, cooking, cleaning and dealing with the youngsters: â€Å"Because the towns are worked to you need to rely upon spouses. Or then again stay home† (242). And still, at the end of the day, it was viewed as untouchable to have a lady in the workforce that was prevalently male. Sadly, in those occasions, a woman’s place on the planet was a guardian for the home and the youngsters, as indicated by men who lived in those occasions. Cleofilas has gone through her whole time on earth caught in a world that conditions her to consider herself to be second rate, and to feel that guys, fathers, spouses, or siblings are by one way or another prevalent creatures that she should serve and respect. The fantasy of the La Llorona story assumes a significant job in the story â€Å"Woman Hollering Creek. † Although the fantasy has numerous adaptations, the general thought is of a lady who is weeping for the sweetheart who has surrendered her and for her kids that she has suffocated in the waterway. The lady at that point is sentenced to meander forever searching for her dead youngsters (â€Å"La Llorona: The Weeping woman† 1).

Antigone Is A Drama Based - Free Essay Example

Antigone Antigone is a drama based on a fictional work written by Sophocles, that recounts the tragic plight of Antigone, after she defied the order of King Creon. However, the civil disobedience exemplified by the main character seeks to awaken the moral courage of every citizen who lives under a harsh rule. It is submitted that every person has a moral obligation to stand against oppression and injustice, even if it means offending the existing laws. The story of Antigone revolves around the courageous story of the main female character. Her brothers, Polyneices and Eteocles fought a battle leading to their untimely death. The king of Thebes, Creon, ordered not to bury the body of Polyneices for being a rebel. The start of the play showed how Antigone convinced her sister Ismene to bury their brotherrs body. Ismene refused as it was a clear defiance of the kingrs order, but Antigone still pursued. Upon learning this, Creon confronted Antigone, who did not deny her civil disobedience. Despite the plea of Haemon, Creonrs son and Antigoners fiance, to forgive her, the king still ordered her to be sent to the cave. Antigone, who was then sorrowful, took away her life by hanging herself inside the cave. Upon learning of Antigoners death, Haemon stabbed himself. When Haemonrs mother, Eurydice, learned of his death, she also took away her life. Creon, devastated of his son and wifers death, condemned himself for his unfortunate fate. The philosophical essay that is relevant to the discussion is the Day of Affirmation, delivered by Robert Kennedy in 1966 at the University of Cape Town (Kennedy 379). This essay is relevant to the thesis, because it resonates the aim of Antigone in defying the order of the king. When Kennedy delivered the speech, racial discrimination was rampant because Apartheid was still in place. Kennedy addressed the speech to the students of Africa, with the aim of challenging them to stand against oppression and injustice, and bring social change in their society. In the same vein, Antigoners civil disobedience was an expression of her desire to challenge the existing status quo, under pain of punishment. The oppressive act came after Creon ordered that Eteocles (Antigoners brother) be given military honors and soldierrs funeral, while Polyneices should not. This was deemed unfair on the part of Antigone, because both deceased were her brothers whom, she believed, have fought bravely. She gave no distinction, but gave equal regard to their contribution. Kennedy said, so too in life of the honorable and good it is they who act rightly who win the prize. I believe that in this generation those with the courage to enter the moral conflict will find themselves with companions in every corner of the world (Kennedy 382). These lines highlight the importance of doing morally good, a deed that Antigone showed. Antigone acknowledged the importance of unwritten laws, which she perceived as divine. She invoked the unwritten code in the society to justify her act of defying the written law. It was clear that Antigone was guided by the principle of the gods, which justified her act of disobedience to the order of the king. One of the scenes that illustrate the moral courage of Antigone was the confrontation between the main character and King Creon. This scene was effective in portraying the courage of the main character, and her gender being a female bolstered this. She did not only resist incorporation or domination, but also explanation or categorization. As opposed to the character of her sister Ismene, who has been depicted as an assailable and disempowered woman, Antigone was a sharp contrast. In other words, the protagonist displayed an unorthodox character of an ancient Greek woman. During their confrontation, she was not assisted by any single person, while Creon was surrounded by many guards. Yet, Antigone spoke without regrets and fear. When Creon asked her if she was the one who buried the body of Polyneices, Antigone bravely answered Yes I am guilty Because it is your law, not the law of god You are merely a man like me, and laws you enact cannot overturn ancient moral laws (Antigone BBC). She also acknowledged that she was not afraid of death as punishment. This scene explained why the law was oppressive and unfair. Aside from the fact that she valued her blood relationship with Polyneices, the kingrs order was also not in consonance with the law of god. Her fierce conviction resonated what Kennedy had said that it was dangerous to be timid the state of being afraid of disapproval from fellows, censure from colleagues, and wrath of the society (Kennedy 382). He encouraged every person to have a moral courage, the same value that Antigone showed in the play. She was prepared for any punishment that Creon might give, even if it was her death. Antigone is the epitome of courage, worthy to emulate. The heart and soul of civil disobedience is the defiance of the written laws, to stop oppression and injustice. Antigone was right in the play, because her acts were aligned with the higher law the divine law. Although she died in the story, Creon received a harsher punishment, when his son and wife died. In the end, the audience could feel how Creon regretted his act of following his order and defying the law of the gods.

Chiquita Banana Case Review - 1106 Words

Peeling Away The Problem Chiquita dramatically lost profits in the early 1990’s and while the EU’s new policies played a role in contributing to those losses they were not ultimately the cause. Clients BATNA Peshendale Holding Ltd Selling Agent: Grace Jimenez Email Address: grace.jimx@gmail.com Commercial property address: 110 Burns Street Bankstown, Sydney. It is a great property with high investment returns. We are selling the property for $ 49.5m. The other alternative comparable property in the area for sale by Ducere Pty Ltd at a price of $54 m. The difference in the prices is $ 4.5m considering that Farnsworth Property Trust wants 10% drop in price thus they would be willing to buy the property at $48.6 m. Therefore, Pashendale Holding LTD BATNA will be at $49 which will be a fair price. Farnsworth Property Trust is interested, and they hope that purchasing this property will meet their strategic plan. The property is being sold at $49.5 m. Another comparable alternative in the area is being sold at $54 m by Ducere Ply property. They have not approached Ducere Ply, but they hope that they can negotiate for 10% drop in price. Thus they expect to purchase the property at $48.6m. Their BATNA is $48.6 since it is the least price they expect to purchase the property from Ducere Pty property. ZOPA range Zone of Possible Agreement or the bargaining range exists if there is a potential agreement that would benefit both sides. The lowest price that the purchaser expects to buy a similar property is $48.6 while this may not be possible the price may be above that since Ducere Property may not agree to sell their property at that price, so I will set my ZOPA range to be $49.5- $49 this price is 8.3% lower that than of Ducere Ply Properties which could be fair for the purchaser. By comparing my clients BATNA and the other parties BATNA then it would be safe to maintain the price as it could favor both parties I wish to confirm that we reached an agreement with Farnsworth Properties that they will purchase the above- mentioned property at a price of $49m The agreement was reached after lengthy negotiations with Farnsworth purchasing agent Junaid Aftab through the email. The negotiations commenced on 10th April 2017 when Junaid sent me an email showing that Farnsworth Ltd was interested in purchasing the property. It took us 3 days to reach an agreement. I convinced the agent that the property would fetch high investment returns and thus the property was worth purchasing. Also, we compared the prices of other comparable properties in the area which the client had identified. The client had information about a commercial property owned by Ducere Ply property which was being sold for $54m. The client had not consulted the firm had hoped they would agree to lower their price by 10% thus it would purchase it at $48.6m. We agreed that we were willing to lower our price to $49m since it is uncertain that Ducere Ply property would agree to lower the price by 10%. Pokemon Phenomenon This kids phenomenon began as a hand-held video game and exploded across the globe, from trading cards to becoming the number one rated television kids' show on the popular cartoon programming Kids' WB! The TV program is drawn in the manner of the old speed racer cartoon with similar type voices. It began showing in syndication in September 1998 and within a few months shot to the top of the ratings chart for children's programs. The Pok?mon phenomenon began in Japan in 1996, with Nintendo inciting a national craze when it introduced software for its Game Boy portable video game system called "Pocket Monsters." The name Pok?mon, is short for POcKEt MONster, each have there own special fighting abilities. Pok?mon is marketed as a creative strategy game based on mythical creatures. Sounds like fun but its more than that, much more. You work your way to the top, perfecting your skills by using your Pok?mon to fight against other Pok?mon trainers. The Pok?mon game does get the kids to think, strategize and use their memory skills. But thinking on what is the question that needs to be asked. " Pok?mon are incredible creatures that share the world with humans,' says Professor Oak (on the program), the leading authority on these monsters." There are currently over 150 documented species of Pok?mon. The professor says "We need to deal with poke'mon as individuals just as we deal with people." Pok?mon frequently take on the characteristics of the human who captured them. The Pok?mon song and mantra is heard on the program and written in the materials. "I want to be the very best like no one ever was, to catch them is my real test to train them is my cause ."I will travel across the land Searching far and wide Each Pok?mon to understand the power that's inside. "Gotta catch them all!" Its you and me I know I know, its my destiny." Just about every child has memorized this stanza. The last line of the Pok?mon mantra, "Gotta catch them all!" is used over and over again to have the kids desire and crave for collecting more Pok?mon paraphernalia. Whatever the creators of these Pocket monsters come out with the kids want they are hooked. Between the TV commercial breaks a Poke'mon comes flashed in a shadow shape and they all say in unison "Whose that Pok?mon." The kids are to recognize the certain character by its shape. Now remember there are over 150 of them so to do this takes quite some time to familiarize themselves with the creatures. This becomes a whole new education for them to learn of these mythical creatures. A Look at The characters The story revolves around a 10 year old boy named Ash Ketchum (a boy and his friends). Brock who is Ashes trouble making partner is girl crazy, he is infatuated with their perfume, dress and shape. Every girl he sees he is in love with. Brock's fascination with the opposite sex often gets him and the gang into trouble. Brock also has a temper (have you seen your child develop one?) and sometimes will hit Misty, who is his friend on the head, as in one case because she wanted to reveal that he loves a certain girl.
